Adonis DNS and DHCP Core Network Services

The Solution

BlueCat Networks provides the industry leading DHCP and DNS appliance solutions. Critical applications including e-mail, web services, ERP, MRP, CRM and IP telephony rely on DNS and DHCP services. Organizations require solutions that prevent DHCP and DNS errors and ensure that these services are configured properly and are highly available. BlueCat's Adonis DNS appliances and DHCP appliances offer a rock-solid solution for your network.

The Challenge
How BlueCat Provides the Solution
  • You need to ensure that your critical DNS and DHCP systems are always available.
  • BlueCat’s Crossover High Availability (XHA) solution protects your system from server or service failure by providing failover capabilities within seconds. BlueCat also offers full support for DHCP failover.
  • You need to ensure that your external and internal DNS servers are secure from attack.
  • BlueCat DNS appliances and virtual servers are security-hardened in a number of ways to provide maximum protection against intrusion.
  • You need a DNS and DHCP solution that follows best practices.
  • BlueCat expertise ensures that you are using best practices.
  • You need a patch management system that allows you to easily patch your servers when a vulnerability is discovered or an update is released.
  • BlueCat handles notifies you of any security or system vulnerabilities and provides an automated patch management system to allow you to patch all of your servers from a central interface.
  • You need to be able to integrate your DNS and DHCP solution with heterogeneous environments such as Active Directory.
  • BlueCat offers a number of solutions to integrate with Windows servers including the Proteus Management Agent for Windows and full integration with Active Directory.
  • You need to manage variety of devices including IP telephones and wireless devices.
  • BlueCat includes support for DHCP classes, vendor profiles, custom options, and ENUM.

Adonis DNS/DHCP appliances provide all of the functionality that modern organizations require including:

Integrated DNS and DHCP

  • Delivers Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services in a single, scalable appliance.
  • Uses ISC BIND 9.6.1 and ISC DHCP version 3.1.2.
  • Enables automatic IP address and DNS name assignment and automatic updating of DNS records when a host’s IP address changes.
  • Supports DDNS and caching server configurations.

Support for IPv4 and IPv6 DNS and DHCP

  • Plugs into any IPv4 and/or IPv6 network.
  • Complete DHCP Lease History.
  • Support for DNS Anycast – a technique for DNS load balancing  in which a common IP address is assigned to multiple DNS servers providing the same service (for load balancing and redundancy).

Support for BIND Views

  • Enables a single Adonis DNS name server to return a different response, based on the origin of the query. (For example, the appliance will return an intranet response if a query originates from within the corporation, or an external address if the query came from an external address).

Configuration/Support for VoIP

  • Offers better control of critical applications requiring dynamic IP assignment.
  • Supports definable options for specific VoIP implementations.
  • Provides built-in vendor profiles and advanced support for ENUM/NAPTR.
  • Accelerates deployment of VoIP and mixed-mode communications while enhancing quality of service.

Built-in TFTP Server

  • Simplifies firmware distribution and management of VoIP networks.

Integrated Network Time Protocol (NTP) Server

  • Sets and maintains ‘system time’ for the Adonis appliance and other devices

Rapid Deployment

  • Deploy DNS and DHCP configurations from Proteus to the Adonis servers by clicking a button. You can also  schedule deployments when it is most convenient. When the configuration received, Adonis is online and ready to process DNS requests.

Seamless Integration with Proteus IPAM

  • Proteus centrally manages all Adonis appliances without becoming a bottleneck or single point of failure.
  • Unlike many first and second generation IPAM solutions, the loss of connectivity between Proteus and the managed Adonis appliances does not result in a DNS / DHCP service interruption.
  • Any changes to the Adonis DNS and DHCP services that occur when Proteus is offline are queued, and then submitted to the back  to Proteus when it is back online. This ensures Proteus' record of DHCP leases and DNS updates are kept current.

DNS and DHCP Best Practices - Architectures That Work

Security, performance and availability are fundamental design objectives for virtually every IP network. There are a number of recommended best practices that help network architects achieve these goals. This paper examines best practices related to DNS and DHCP, key services that enable modern IP networks.

Secure DNS/DHCP Management - An Integrated Solution

This paper briefly traces some of the challenges involved with IP address distribution over the past two decades, to the current adoption of DHCP as the dynamic protocol of choice for pain-free management of network resources. Integral to the theme of secure yet reliable network administration is the integration of DNS and DHCP into a single network device called the Adonis DNS/DHCP Appliance™ which ensures that traditional barriers to secure and effective resource allocations are overcome with an efficient yet easy-to-use solution that enhances enterprise information security

Adonis: DNS/DHCP for Small to Medium Sized Business

Small to medium sized business have typically built their own DNS and DHCP services, used Windows DNS/DHCP or turned to a hosted service provider for one or both of these services. This approach can initially appear to offer tremendous cost savings, but contains many hidden costs and risks that are not always apparent until a catastrophic loss of service occurs.

Cache Poisoning Raises Cash Crop for DNS Pharmers

DNS (Domain Name System) servers let us navigate the Internet in real time and are critical to network security. They match the names of network resources and websites with unique numerical addresses. This information is cached for other users of the system. Cache poisoning is an attack where a DNS server receives bogus information but is not aware that the information is invalid.

Is It Really Part of My Network? Adonis DHCP and MAC-based Security

This paper introduces and describes the MAC Filtering and MAC Authentication systems for DHCP in the Adonis DNS/DHCP appliances by BlueCat Networks. It also presents MAC security in a real-world scenario, and discusses the features in the context of Network Admissions Control (NAC) systems.

How to Integrate Active Directory and DNS

This whitepaper describes the way in which Active Directory uses DNS in conjunction with the Windows Domain Locator service for distributed computing environments. It also discussing how the Adonis server integrated into an Active Directory environment. DNS replication mechanisms are discussed including their pros and cons. As well, Active Directory records and DNS labeling conventions are described in detail to give the reader a deeper understanding of how the locator service works.

Monitoring DNS and DHCP

Organizations today need real-time visibility into their network in order to understand and be aware of what’s going on at any point in time. Without the ability to monitor  the network, they have black holes in their network that leave them guessing. To get this bigger picture, an IPAM solution needs to integrate with the DNS and DHCP servers so that as addresses are being allocated and host names are registered, network administrators are made aware instantly.
